So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.” Genesis 22:14 (NIV)
Jehovah-Jireh
On the mountain… it will be provided… it will be seen (KJV)
We will look at four mountains:
1. Winning the battles of life. Ex. 17 and the battle with an age-old enemy of God’s people: Amalek
2. Hearing the voice of God. Ex. 19 and Mt. Sinai when God’s made His Word known to Israel.
3. Knowing God for who He is. Luke 9 and the Mount of Transfiguration where Peter, James, and John saw Jesus for Who He really is.
4. Moving forward with Him. Matthew 14 which is where we are today. Jesus goes up on the mountain and we are moving across a shifting changing world.
8 Now Amalek came and fought with Israel in Rephidim. 9 And Moses said to Joshua, “Choose us some men and go out, fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand.” 10 So Joshua did as Moses said to him, and fought with Amalek. And Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. 11 And so it was, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. 12 But Moses’ hands became heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. 13 So Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword. 14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write this for a memorial in the book and recount it in the hearing of Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.” 15 And Moses built an altar and called its name, The-Lord-Is-My-Banner; 16 for he said, “Because the Lord has sworn: the Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.” Exodus 17:8-16 (NKJV)
8 Now Amalek came and fought with Israel in Rephidim. Exodus 17:8 (NKJV)
Who is this Amalek?
Numbers 21:14 speaks of a book called the Book of the Wars of the Lord. Then in Numbers 24:20 says they were the first ones to fight against the Children of Israel after they left Egypt.
We find back in Genesis 36 that Amalek is a descendant of Esau, Jacob’s estranged brother.
Later is Dt. 25:18-19 it says that there will be a perennial war with Amalek.
1. We fight a PERENNIAL enemy.
C.I. Scofield in his study Bible says that this corresponds to the perennial battle the believer wages with the FLESH. Galatians says:
For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. Galatians 5:17 (ESV)
9 And Moses said to Joshua, “Choose us some men and go out, fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand.” Exodus 17:9 (NKJV)
The “FIRSTS” of this passage:
This is the FIRST battle Israel fights when they leave Egypt
This is the FIRST mention in the Bible of Joshua
2. God will give us the PLAN.
We need to always seek God for His “NOW” plan.
Only a few weeks before, when the Egyptians were pursuing Israel, the command was “Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord” (Exodus 14:13)
Now, the plan is Joshua gather a battalion of choice men. He was to attack while Moses went and stood on the mountain.
10 So Joshua did as Moses said to him, and fought with Amalek. And Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. Exodus 17:10 (NKJV)
3. God POSITIONS us to win.
We need to know our assignments.
They could see each other.
MOSES ON THE MOUNTAIN WAS LIKE A BANNER TO THE BATTLE BELOW.
11 And so it was, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. Exodus 17:11 (NKJV)
4. We need to know the source of our POWER.
Moses’ ROD.
9 Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the Lord! Awake as in the ancient days, in the generations of old. Are You not the arm that cut Rahab apart, and wounded the serpent? 10 Are You not the One who dried up the sea, the waters of the great deep; that made the depths of the sea a road for the redeemed to cross over? Isaiah 51:9-10 (NKJV)
1 In Judah God is known; His name is great in Israel. 2 In Salem also is His tabernacle, and His dwelling place in Zion. 3 There He broke the arrows of the bow, the shield and sword of battle. Psalm 76:1-3 (NKJV)
12 But Moses’ hands became heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. Exodus 17:12 (NKJV)
5. PRAYER tests our endurance.
13 So Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword. Exodus 17:13 (NKJV)
14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write this for a memorial in the book and recount it in the hearing of Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.” 15 And Moses built an altar and called its name, The-Lord-Is-My-Banner; 16 for he said, “Because the Lord has sworn: the Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.” Exodus 17:14-16 (NKJV)
