“O Holy Night”
History
of O Holy Night
1847
1.
Lyrics
by Placide Cappeau. A non-Christian who
ultimately became an socialist supporter of the French Revolution.
2.
Music: Adolphe Charles Adams. Found it quite challenging since he was
Jewish and did not believe in the deity of Jesus.
3.
Christmas
Eve 1847 it was introduced and immediately accepted.
4.
Soon
the Church discovered who the wrote the lyrics and music and BANNED the song.
5.
Too
late.
6.
1855
in America. John Sullivan Dwight,
abolitionist, translated into English.
The third verse was particularly important.
Truly
He taught us to love one another
His law is love and His gospel is peace
Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother
And in His name all oppression shall cease
His law is love and His gospel is peace
Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother
And in His name all oppression shall cease
7.
Christmas
Eve, 1906. Reginald Fessenden (associate
of Thomas Edison) developed a new type of generator and was able for the first
time to broadcast the human voice over the airwaves. Up until that time, coded messages were all
that were broadcast. He chose to read Luke 2.
And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar
Augustus that all the world should be registered. Luke 2:1 (NKJV)
7 And she
brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid
Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. 8 Now there were in the same
country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by
night. 9 And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them,
and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. 10 Then
the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings
of great joy which will be to all people. 11 For there is born
to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And
this will be the sign to you:
You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.” Luke 2:7-12 (NKJV)
8. He
then took his violin and played “O Holy Night”.
It was the first song ever played over radio.
Oh holy night!
The stars are brightly shining
It is the night of the dear Savior's birth!
Long lay the world in sin and error pining
Till he appear'd and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn!
Fall on your knees
Oh hear the angel voices
Oh night divine
Oh night when Christ was born
Oh night divine
Oh night divine
Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming
With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand
So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming
Here come the wise men from Orient land
The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger
In all our trials born to be our friend
Truly He taught us to love one another
His law is love and His gospel is peace
Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother
And in His name all oppression shall cease
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
Let all within us praise His holy name
Two phrases leap out to me:
1. And in His name all oppression shall
cease.
2. Long lay the world in sin and error
pining
Till he appear'd and the soul felt its worth.
Till he appear'd and the soul felt its worth.
3. A thrill of hope the weary world
rejoices
For
yonder breaks a new and glorious morn!
LIBERATION
This past
week, the world observed the passing of Nelson Mandela.
The
headlines of the NEWS STAR was “The Last Great Liberator”. Actually the quote was “the last great
liberator of the 20th Century.”
VALUE
Here’s the
picture: world lying in sin and error PINING.
What does
“pining” mean: suffer a mental
and physical decline, esp. because of a broken heart.
Sin and
Error
A NEW DAY
“Weary
world”
“Thrill of
hope”
“A new and
glorious morn”
Here’s a question: Where in your life do you feel tired and weary? What’s causing your weariness?
20 I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within
me. 21 Yet this
I call to mind and therefore I have hope:
22 Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never
fail. 23 They
are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. 24 I say to myself, “The
Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.” 25 The
Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; 26 it
is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.
Lamentation 3:20-26 (NIV)

NEW DAY does Jesus have for you?

“The
Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” Psalm 23:1.
“O
seek the Lord, you his saints, there is no want to those who fear him. The young lions lack and suffer hunger, but
those who seek the Lord shall not lack any good thing.” Psalm 34:9-10

the Lord.
With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken. 9 Therefore my heart is glad
and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, 10 because
you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your
faithful one see decay. 11 You
make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence,
with eternal pleasures at your right hand. Psalm 16:5-11 (NIV)
Manna
Daily Bread
He gives you just enough for TODAY. God does not fortify you for ten years from
now. He does not fortify you for next
week. He fortifies you for TODAY.
ENJOY
YOUR PORTION; RATHER THAN LOOKING AT EVERBODY ELSE’S PORTION!
Your kids are your portion.
Your wife/husband is your portion.
Your church family is your portion.
Ultimately the only way that works is for you to say
THE LORD IS MY PORTION!
2.
A
new day with Jesus brings you HOPE to MOVE AHEAD.
24 I say to myself, “The Lord
is my portion; therefore I will wait
for him.” Lamentations 3:21 (NIV)
25 The Lord
is good to those whose hope is in him. Lam. 3:25 (NIV)
Hope to keep going.
Satan wants to neutralize you – to stop you. Satan says you can’t go any further until
…. And then lists 1,000 things that must
shape up before you can face the future.
A million questions need to be answered.
The
thrill of hope.
“Man can live about forty days without food, about three days without water, about eight minutes without air...but only for one second without hope.” Hal Lindsay
Let us hold tightly without
wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise. Hebrews 10:23 (NLT)
3.
A
new day with Jesus brings the HELP you SEEK.
26 it is good to wait
quietly for the salvation of the Lord. Lamentations 3:26 (NIV)
The difference one day can make.
11 And do this,
understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up
from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first
believed. 12 The
night is nearly over; the day is almost here. Romans 13:11-12 (NIV)
