Explosive Truth

"One Year Bible" New Testament Passage (for Sat., Sept. 1)
II Corinthians 5:11-21

For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.  II Corinthians 5:21 (NKJV)

This small verse is perhaps the best summary in all of Scripture of the greatest news in the world. In these few words, Paul lays out the heart of the Gospel. We do well to linger here and allow the richness and beauty of Christ and His Cross to impact us deeply.

Jesus do not just pay for our sin or erase our sin, He BECAME our sin. He, who was absolutely innocent, suffered not just the penalty for sin, He placed Himself IN OUR PLACE. This is the ultimate expression of self-sacrificial live. In so doing, He totally satisfied the wrath of God. He carried it away.

But, even beyond that, He IMPUTES to us His righteousness. He bestows perfect righteousness on us. This is not just so we could HAVE the righteousness of God, but that we would BE the righteousness of God. This is heady stuff!

Most believers have barely begun to touch the magnitude of what God has done for us in Christ. If we ever unleash this power and truth, it will be explosive!  It will change you.

So DRINK DEEPLY. Savor the majesty of the grace of God. This is glorious territory. LOOK WHAT THE LORD HAS DONE!!!!

Your Fantastic Future

"One Year Bible" New Testament Passage (for Fri., Aug. 31)
II Corinthians 4:13-5:10

16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.  II Corinthians 4:16 (NKJV)

Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.  II Corinthians 5:5 (NKJV)

There is something wonderful being birthed through your life. Paul calls it a "weight of glory" (4:17).  Your salvation - your regeneration - was just the start of something eternal. It is beyond your wildest imagining the fantastic things God has for you.

In fact, it is so great that you're going to have to get a new body to accommodate the power, the joy, the LIFE that is now growing in you. Your present physical body just can't keep up.

So, the Lord says that we are to focus on that which is breaking forth. Don't major on that which is failing. We are GUARANTEED that this new life in us will prevail. It can't be stopped.

The Bible tells us this. The Holy Spirit is the DOWN PAYMENT on your future. God has a plan. His plans are perfect. He never fails. Therefore, you have a FANTASTIC FUTURE.

God's Chosen Vessels

"One Year Bible" New Testament Passage (for Thurs., Aug. 30)
II Corinthians 4:1-12

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. II Corinthians 4:7 (NKJV)

God has chosen a particular way in which He desires to move and operate in our world. It is amazing to me the manner in which He has elected to carry forward His purposes. Our wise God has chosen to use fragile, fallen human beings to serve as the conduits through which He will work.

He could have chosen a number of other ways to reach the world. He could have sent an angel. He could have written in the clouds. He could have built an imposing edifice. Yes, He can use ANYTHING. But His chosen vessel is a man or woman committed to Him and filled with His Word and His Spirit.

There is nothing more powerful on earth as a believer who carries the greatest treasure in the universe. Satan fears the Spirit-filled, Spirit-empowered child of God. You are GOD'S SECRET WEAPON. So don't get caught up in the vessel - the earthen vessel. You are the carrier of the power of God. And THAT brings great glory to God.

The Importance of Spiritual Vision

"One Year Bible" New Testament Passage (for Wed., Aug. 29)
II Corinthians 3:1-18

But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord. II Corinthians 3:18 (NKJV)

Vision is a powerful force in our lives. It is the ability to see. I am not here referring to natural eyes, but to SPIRITUAL EYES.  This is not some hyper-spiritual, mystical sensitivity reserved for the few who are "more mature".  This is the domain of all who would KNOW THE LORD and TAKE GROUND in His Kingdom.  Spiritual eyesight is necessary for all spiritual growth and advance.

In the 1st chapter of Ephesians, Paul taught us to pray for the ability to see the Lord and His great plans for us.  There we find these words: "... 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, 18 the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know ..." (Eph. 1:17-18).  He then goes on to describe the riches that God says BELONG TO US NOW. When we SEE these things, we KNOW them. When we KNOW them, we are in position to POSSESS them.

Our walk with God is IGNITED by seeing Him. His power is released to transform us into the image of the One we behold. Then, we no longer struggle to change ourselves. GOD DOES IT by the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Aroma of Christ

"One Year Bible" New Testament Passage (for Tues., Aug. 28)
II Corinthians 2:12-17

Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place. II Corinthians 2:14 (NKJV)

There is an atmosphere that should surround every believer - every follower of the Lord Jesus. It is an atmosphere of triumph. But, this is an interesting and amazing kind of triumph.

The natural man wins by domination and intimidation. He overwhelms the adversary by superior strength. It is a conquest fed by ego and aggressiveness. This is path for advance by the world's definition of power.

The follower of Jesus exudes a triumph based on surrender!  It is a victory birthed out of defeat - the death of Christ on the Cross. We win by LAYING OUR LIVES DOWN!  It is not fed by selfish ego, but instead by the love of God.

This is the fragrance of Christ. It is the aroma of the offering laid on the altar. And it is PLEASING to the Father.

You bring an atmosphere with you wherever you go. Do people see your superior personality or unique gifts? Or do they see a person broken by God so that Jesus shines through you?  It is an incredible privilege to carry the aroma of Jesus.

Winning the Invisible War

"One Year Bible" New Testament Passage (for Mon., Aug. 27)
II Corinthians 1:12-2:11

lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices. II Corinthians 2:11 (NKJV)

There is an invisible war going on around us that is very real. It is a spiritual battle against an enemy who does not play fair. Most believers operate day-in and day-out unaware of this hidden realm.  As a result we may find ourselves entrenched in continual difficulties that seem to defy normal solution.

There is a call from God today that we all need to hear. God is telling us to "Wake up and wise up!" Our enemy, the devil, is increasing his assault on the followers of Jesus. He is daily inventing new devices and strategies to entrap and enslave.

Satan will use any angle, any advantage he can to win the battle over your life. So, here is wisdom that each of us should heed: allow God to address your weak points. Face your battles. Each one of us our own unique set of vulnerabilities. DO NOT ALLOW THE DEVIL TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOUR WEAKNESSES!

Expressly bring your life under Christ's rule and under His care. If you will do this, God will meet you and help you. Spiritual warfare is a part of our walk with God - and by the power of the Spirit and by the word of His authority, no weapon of the enemy will prevail over you and overcome you. Jesus wins!

The God of All Comfort

"One Year Bible" New Testament Passage (for Sun., Aug. 26)
II Corinthians 1:1-11

And our hope for you is steadfast, because we know that as you are partakers of the sufferings, so also you will partake of the consolation.  II Corinthians 1:7 (NKJV)

Why does God lead us through seasons of suffering?  There are those who believe that God could never do such a thing. They would say that only the devil is involved when it comes to suffering. God only deals with blessing.

The fact is, however, that our sovereign God DOES lead us through times of testing, times of trial, times of suffering. It is important for us to understand this.  When these things come our way, it is not a sign that we are out of God's will, or under judgment in some way. Suffering is not always because we have fallen into some heinous sin.

Scripture declares that suffering is a context in which we get to know God better!  We become personally acquainted with the GOD OF ALL COMFORT. God wants us to know and experience the intimate care and encouragement that comes from God in the darkest moments.

This is so important!  It is part of His entire redemptive mission. We are sent into a sick and suffering world. We carry the ministry of the GOD OF ALL COMFORT. This is not a doctrine or a teaching. It is an experience. It is like medicine to those that suffer.

One last word: if we walk in a world of suffering, we MUST find God's comfort. And the comfort is stronger than the suffering. When this topic comes up, some folks think it means we are always to carry hard and heavy trials. God's way, however, says that if suffering abounds, the comfort should abound even more. That's the way God wants it. NO MATTER HOW HARD THINGS GET, WE CARRY COMFORT GREATER THAN THE SUFFERING. That brings great glory to our God.

Taking Your Stand

"One Year Bible" New Testament Passage (for Sat., Aug. 25)
I Corinthians 16:1-24

13 Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong. 14 Let all that you do be done with love.  I Corinthians 16:13-14 (NKJV)

If you want to follow Jesus, it will be required that you learn how to take a stand. You must learn how to stand up for what you believe, and stand against that which is wrong. When everything else is falling down, you must know how to keep faithfully standing.

Our walk with Jesus is not a matter of passively allowing life and circumstances to carry you where it will. Being a Christ-follower means seeking and finding God's will for your life, and then pursuing that no matter how much opposition may be thrown at you.

That requires faith and courage. The adversary comes seeking to tear apart our God-given dreams. Satan and the world conspire to turn you back from simple obedience to God. The evil one seeks to fill you with fear and insecurity so that your progress is halted.

May God open your eyes today to see the great advances that even now are at the door. As you WATCH, may you not only see Satanic opposition but, more importantly DIVINE OPPORTUNITY. May you always stand against sin, temptation, and defeat. And may God's great strength rise in you today.  Amen.

The Defeat of Death

"One Year Bible" New Testament Passage (for Fri., Aug. 24)
I Corinthians 15:29-58

So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.”  I Corinthians 15:54 (NKJV)

Death does not belong here. It is an intrusion into God's beautiful creation. It is the direct result of sin. The Scripture repeatedly ties the two together. "The wages of sin is death." (Rom. 6:23) "The soul who sins shall die." (Ez. 18:4)

Death is both a physical reality and it is a spiritual realm. Jesus, in His work of redemption, came to destroy the power of hell, sin, and death.  As followers of Jesus, we are guaranteed the final outcome of this conflict between life and death.

Paul uses dramatic terminology. Life not only overcomes death, it "swallows it up".  This speaks to more than the minimum triumph. It involves complete and overwhelming superiority.

God not only heals your body.  He gives you a new and GLORIOUS BODY. God not only corrects your failings. He gives you COMPLETE AND OBVIOUS SUCCESS. He not only restores broken dreams. He shows things BEYOND YOUR DREAMS.

Death is not only defeated. It is swallowed up in victory. And that's guaranteed!

The Release of God's Power in You

"One Year Bible" New Testament Passage (for Thurs., Aug. 23)
I Corinthians 15:1-28

But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. I Corinthians 15:10 (NKJV)

It is common to define GRACE as the unmerited favor of God. And so it is. Grace is the free gift of God to us despite what we really deserve. Grace is POSITIVE. It is more that the withholding of punishment (that is MERCY).  It is the bestowing of benefit that we did not earn.

But, grace goes even further.  It is more than a doctrine about how God accepts us.  Grace is the RELEASE OF THE POWER OF GOD. When grace is released in our lives, the result is not only a new STANDING before God, but also a new POWER from God.

In other words, grace and works are not opposites. They are instead akin to each other. True grace produces powerful activity. Grace brings great vitality. You find yourself able to do that which otherwise you could not do.

Grace takes us to a higher level. We begin to operate in the supernatural power of God. The Holy Spirit releases His dunamis (Greek word for "power") and the results are that you mount up in the winds of God and are carried faster, higher, and further than ever before. That's grace!

Gathered for Power

"One Year Bible" New Testament Passage (for Wed., Aug. 22)
I Corinthians 14:18-40

How is it then, brethren? Whenever you come together, each of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.  I Corinthians 14:26 (NKJV)

It is amazing what God wants to do whenever we come together as the church. Unfortunately, for many, church is synonymous with BORING. In far too many churches, it is nothing more than a crowd of people who do almost nothing watching a few people do almost everything. The result is something like a SPECTATOR SPORT.

Scripture describes an entirely different picture. When we come together, the potential for powerful ministry is multiplied. There is a special sense in which God shows up in power when we gather in His Name.

We learn how to better hear from God. We learn how to more powerfully pray for one another. We experience a greater sense of divine presence so that "fireworks" start going off in our hearts.

Far too many people think that good ministry can only take place on the platform up front. They think it has to have the spotlight on it. But, the Bible says that when we come together spiritual activity can happen IN EVERY PERSON who is open to it.

You might get a special song that rises in your heart. You might get a new insight (a revelation) about what God is saying or doing. You might feel a direction flowing out of your heart toward a need you see.

Not every impression is for EVERYONE to see or hear. In fact, relatively few will be brought "to the microphone." Most are the great movement of God that is released among us when we come together.

So, when you come together, you ought to be ready to share the gifts that God is releasing in your life. That is exciting. We are not gathered for "religion." We are GATHERED FOR POWER.

Spiritual Gifts for Today

"One Year Bible" New Testament Passage (for Tues., Aug. 21)
I Corinthians 14:1-17

Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel. I Corinthians 14:12 (NKJV)

Spiritual gifts is a very exciting topic. This is the realm in which God the Holy Spirit imparts to believers all the various abilities and enablements we find in Scripture.

I am convinced that most believers settle for far less than what God wants to give us. When we look into Scripture we see something of the way God operates. Most people think that those things happened in Scripture but could never happen through us today.

Paul speaks directly to us when he says that we ought have white-hot desire to see God's gifts operate around us RIGHT NOW. We are living in BIBLE TIMES -- not the days in which the Bible was written, but the days in which the Bible is FULFILLED!

So, why does God want to do these things through us?  His aim is not to make us "super stars". His objective is not to see how many spiritual fireworks He can set off through your touch. His objective is to BUILD UP THE BRIDE.

God has granted wonderful and precious gifts to each and every believer. He has done this so that together we might add up to look like Jesus. Each of us has a part of Jesus' ministry. When all these operate together, the church - the body of Christ -- is built up. And that is EXCELLENT!

The Most Powerful Force in the Universe

"One Year Bible" New Testament Passage (for Mon., Aug. 20)
I Corinthians 12:26-13:13

Love suffers long and is kind; ... bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.  Love never fails. I Corinthians 13:4, 7-8 (NKJV)

The COVENANT LOVE of God is the most powerful force in the universe. It is far more than the weak, emotional, temporary favouritism that the world calls love. In fact, the case can be made that the world does not know how to truly love at all. Feel-good affection can only carry you so far. COVENANT LOVE is a different kind of "critter".

The love of God is the rock-hard commitment He has made toward us FOR OUR BENEFIT. He has determined good toward you and me based on the obedience of Christ. Nothing can stop His favor toward you. When I say that He loves you, I am not just saying that He likes you and has warm feelings toward you. I am saying that He has made an unbreakable vow, an unbreakable commitment that will always manifest good and benefit toward you.

The COVENANT LOVE of God challenges me. I am so thankful that He loves me that way. Now He calls me to love others with the same kind of COVENANT LOVE. I am called to believe, endure, be patient, forbear, forgive, and favor those who at times displease me. I am called to walk IN LOVE just as God has loved me.

This is "the more excellent way." It is the call of God to you and me to no longer walk in our childish, selfish ways. This is what it means to KNOW THE LORD.

So, today, Heavenly Father, help me to walk in your COVENANT LOVE. Lift my vision higher so that I no longer see the failures of fallen man. But, instead may I see Your great goodness so that I can be more like You.

Face Up: You Have a Future

Here's the notes from the message delivered at New Life Community Church, Sunday, August 19, 2012 entitled "Face Up: You Have a Future".  You can listen to this message at our webpage:  www.newlifesite.com

Inside Story, Part 8
“Face Up: You Have a Future”

13 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.  15 My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.  17 How precious to me are your thoughts, God!  How vast is the sum of them!  18 Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand — when I awake, I am still with you.  Psalm 139:13-18 (NIV)

What happens when you are emotionally shattered?  What do you do when you are beat up on the inside?  Simple Answer:  Get in the presence of God and let Him heal you.  We want to look a bit closer at this thing of emotional healing.
In a broader context, we from time to time do what we call a FREEDOM WEEKEND.  Friday evening and Saturday to minister on three areas:
1.      Pulling Down Strongholds
2.      Breaking Curses
3.      Spiritual Liberation
4.      Emotional Healing
This is huge in every person’s life.
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; 19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”  20 Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”   Luke 4:18-21 (NKJV)

It’s summed up in terms of Jesus healing your life so that you can go on to fulfill His great will for you.
I’m using the imagery of the FACE as a part of this concluding message.  “Face” is an interesting concept in the Scripture.  It’s more than just the physical area at the front of your head.  It actually speaks to your “person” and how you relate with the world.  We speak about the face – “losing face”, “I’m having trouble facing people.”  There is the “happy face.”  “His face shone.”  At times we can read each other’s faces.  You can say good things with your mouth, but your face tells what’s really going on.

For I shall yet praise Him, the help of my countenance and my God
. Psalm 42:11 (NKJV)

He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.  Isaiah 53:3 (NKJV)

but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.  Isaiah 59:2 (ESV)

We become so beat up on the inside what we can’t face the future.  Pain…injury…loss of hope
Couple of weeks ago, referred to MRI.  Diagnostic Tool.  MRI heals no one, it just tells you what’s wrong.
We need a spiritual MRI.

This week, began Physical Therapy.
1.      An Injury took place.  Something went wrong.
2.      Pain and problems
3.      Dr. orders MRI
4.      Surgery
5.      Recuperation – Physical Therapy
What if we could have SPIRITUAL or EMOTIONAL THERAPY?
1.      An injury takes place.  You have something wrong down inside now.  Guilt. Anger. Depression. Etc.
2.      You come to Dr. Jesus.
3.      Spiritual MRI
4.      Surgery
5.      Now you are in the healing process.  You need EMOTIONAL THERAPY.

The Scripture is full of verses dealing with EMOTIONAL HEALING.
Psalm 38:18.  The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit.
Isaiah 57:15.  For this is what the high and exalted One says— he who lives forever, whose name is holy: “I live in a high and holy place, but also with the one who is contrite and lowly in spirit,
to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite.
Psalm 51:17.  The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart—these, O God, You will not despise.
Psalm 41:4.  I said, “Lord, be merciful to me; heal my soul, for I have sinned against You.”
Psalm 147:2-4.  The Lord builds up Jerusalem; He gathers together the outcasts of Israel.  He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

Three Examples of How We Handle Emotional Injury:
1.      A Tree putting on deeper layers of bark.  Just add a layer and you can hide the decay inside.
2.      A Car with one piston not firing.  Runs a little rough, but gives out on the uphill.
3.      A Man who injures his arm.  Weak arm makes you build up the good arm to compensate.

Four Steps to Restoration
When Craig came up to me, I arose and began walking toward him.  He immediately stopped me and said, “You’ve got to walk correctly.  You’ve already learned how to walking incorrectly.  Now you’ve got to learn again how to walk.”

1.     You’ve got to learn how to WALK again.
You have COMPENSATED for your injury.
Your injury has affected your walk.
You must be INTENTIONAL.
Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, Ephesians 5:15 (ESV)

They then took me to a room and had me lay down and measured the way my leg bends.
2.     We need divine MEASUREMENT.

Then I was given a reed like a measuring rod. And the angel stood, saying, “Rise and measure the temple of God, the altar, and those who worship there.”  Revelation 11:1 (NKJV)

Then I had to lay down and let them work on me.  Laid heat on the knee for 12 minutes.  Then electric massage of knee.  Asked what they’re trying to accomplish.  Said BREAK UP THE TOXINS.  I asked, “What are toxins.”  He said, “Well, the things that shouldn’t be there.”

3.     Break up the TOXINS.

Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.  II Corinthians 7:1 (NIV)

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. … Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. … You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Colossians 3:2,5,7-8 (NIV)

Then they put me through a series of “small” exercises.  None of them was a “back-breaker”.  They said, “Just do these as we tell you.  And you will return to full health.”

4.     Little steps of OBEDIENCE go a long way.
So many Scriptures about how God will order your steps.
He will give you places to walk.  He will show you where to step.  All that you are to do is take the steps He places before you.
To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.  I Peter 2:21 (NIV)
