"One Year Bible" New Testament Passage
Romans 15:23-16:9
1 I commend to you Phoebe our sister, who is a servant of the church in Cenchrea, 2 that you may receive her in the Lord in a manner worthy of the saints, and assist her in whatever business she has need of you; for indeed she has been a helper of many and of myself also. Romans 16:1-2 (NKJV)
Occasionally we find individuals who by nature seem to be servants. They elevate everything around them. Phoebe was such a person.
She was called "a servant of the church." She was constantly finding ways to help people. As such, she was a source of inspiration and refreshing to not only Cenchrea, but us today.
In a world absorbed in self-absorption, the heart of true servanthood will shine like a light in darkness. Jesus was that kind of person. He cared nothing for the praise of men, but instead stooped to help the helpless.
Paul recognized this gift of serving in Phoebe. He wanted the entire church to move toward this servant lifestyle. He called to Romans to assist her in this work. In essence, we are called to become servants of the servants. When we do this, the Spirit of Christ will be on us and we will LOOK LIKE JESUS.
