The Sounding of the Trumpet

"One Year Bible" Old Testament History Passage
Numbers 10:1-11:23

"Make two silver trumpets for yourself; you shall make them of hammered work; you shall use them for calling the congregation and for directing the movement of the camps.... When you go to war in your land against the enemy who oppresses you, then you shall sound alarm with the trumpets..."  Numbers 10:2,9 (NKJV)

The trumpet in Scripture is always indicative of prophetic ministry (see I Co. 14:8).  Prophetic ministry is vitally important for our progress in God.  It is like the sounding of a trumpet.  It is God speaking to us both corporately and individually.

The silver trumpets had three functions in ancient Israel.  We read about them here in this passage.  The three functions are:  1) GATHERING -- calling the people together, 2) MOVEMENT -- signalling movement to new locations, and 3) WAR -- a signal that war is under way and we need to do battle!

We need these three functions today!  When God speaks by His Spirit, there will be a gathering, a rallying of the people of God.  We come together in oneness of mind and heart.  When God speaks by His Spirit, He is able to move us to new places.  We break new ground.  Prophecy often gives us needed direction and confirmation.  When God speaks by His spirit, there is a rising up to do battle against our enemy, the devil.

May God speak to us today causing us to rally together; causing us to move to new places; helping us to effectively do spiritual battle against all forces that oppress.  This is "the sounding of the trumpet."
