The Focus of History

"One Year Bible" New Testament Passage (for Wed., Aug. 15)
I Corinthians 9:19-10:13

Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. I Corinthians 10:11 (NKJV)

The Old Testament is full of magnificent stories.  We might ask, "What is the reason that these stories have been given to us?" There are several very important answers to this significant question.

1. They are the historic record of how God has moved in history. We believe that the Bible record is not only inspirational, it is accurate.
2. These Old Testament stories show us something of what God is like. He REVEALS Himself in that which He does.
3. These stories serve to illustrate and teach us what God can do in your life. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Heb. 13:8).

Paul here gives us a fourth reason. He says that EVERYTHING in the Old Testament points toward us. God has always had an eternal purpose. He has desired to gather a Bride for His Son. He has aimed to bring redeemed humanity into FULLNESS. The Old Testament is not an end in itself. It POINTS toward Jesus and you and me.

Everything about the story of Israel is an example for us.  God set Israel free from Egypt. He sets us free from bondage to sin, Satan, and death. He brought Israel through the wilderness with testing. So, God leads us through similar temptations providing us tools for conquest so that we may be able to stand.  He led Israel into a land of promise, so He leads us into our destiny.

You are the focus of history. Everything in the past workings of God points toward you. So, God says LIVE TOWARD YOUR DESTINY. Don't give up and sell out. Don't cave in and quit. Don't settle for second best. God's plan is still working today.
